Hot Rod/Bar & Wire

Eddy Current Testing System for Inline Hot Bar and Rod

Andec high speed, high temperature testing systems, like the ones shown here, are mounted directly in hot bar and rod rolling mills.

This system detects surface defects in the red-hot bar or rod while it is moving along at up to 150m (490’) per second, with a surface temperature up to 1250˚C (2280˚F).

The system uses special continuously water-cooled encircling coils held in water cooled holding blocks with hardened steel guides, which keep the bar/rod centered as it moves through the test coil.

The coil and guide holding blocks can be hinged so they can be opened for easy replacements of the coil and guides when bar/rod diameters are changed in the mill.

The Eddy Current instrument and system controlling computer are in a floor mounted sealed and air-conditioned cabinet.
